Fall 2022 Update

Hi fam, is it! Iโ€™ve been very productive on the backend of โ€œAckerly Green,โ€ working on the site, the app, and my new book, as well as brainstorming immersive and interactive plans for 2023; but I realize it might seem pretty quiet from the front end, so now that itโ€™s technically autumn (!) I figured it was a good time to check in and give you an update!

Iโ€™m still here, working at Ackerly Green every (week) day, BUT with a more reasonable and responsible workload. I am truly, honestly, giving myself time to rest, recover, and enjoy time away from my self-imposed responsibilities! Progress!

PERSONALLY:

Iโ€™ve been traveling, reading (Stephen Kingโ€™s Fairy Tale currently), dabbling in a little magic practice, and playing with AI art (seen in this postโ€™s main image. I am giving myself a challenge of coming up with blog post header images using ten iterations or fewer.) Iโ€™ve also been falling in love with my e-ink notebook, falling even further in love with our five chickens, and watching my kids grow up way too fast (how have I, a young, young man, ended up with 13-year-old twins? A mystery for the ages.)

Now, onto the more important stuff.

THE SITE:

First and foremost, letโ€™s talk about the new forum. I have heard you loud and clear that it can feel overwhelming and confusing, especially for those coming from the old Discourse forum. The โ€œActivity Feedโ€ on the main page is one prime culprit because itโ€™s meant to be a mix of discussions, personal updates, and blog post comments. Still, itโ€™s SO different from how weโ€™re all used to interacting here. I completely get that and am working on making the main area of the website more discussion-focused, showcasing just the most recent forum/topic updates while also having secondary info about users, journals, and blog posts either in a new sidebar or otherwise minimized on the feed.

Iโ€™m also planning on putting together some videos on how to use the new forum, which I think will be useful for veterans and newbies alike.

Also, one downside of transitioning the forum to Wordpress is that spammers and bots love Wordpress, so weโ€™ve seen more spammy comments and replies in the past few months than we ever did on the old forum. To solve that, I installed the Captcha 3 reputation system on the forumโ€™s registration, and since I did, zero spambot sign-ups. So, hereโ€™s hoping Iโ€™ve stemmed the tide, but if you catch one I miss, feel free to report it with the moderation functions on the site or app (and if you donโ€™t know where those are, see above, a video is coming soon!

APP:

Iโ€™ve pushed four whole app updates since the summer! These minor updates have increased the appโ€™s speed, added community moderation options, and added access controls that will be very useful next year when we start playing together again!

More updates are coming this year and early next year, including native reactions/liking, which was such a core part of the old forum, swipe and gesture support, custom post type support (which is GREAT for me), dark mode, and support for in-app live streaming!

NARRATIVE:

This will be an entire post on its own. For now, Iโ€™ll say I have spent this whole year thinking of ways to revitalize what I do here, how to make it feel special again, for you, for me, and how to make the experience less finite. I want veterans to feel excited and rewarded for the time theyโ€™ve invested, and new readers feel less like theyโ€™re looking through someone elseโ€™s photo album and more like time travelers, able to re-experience the magic no matter when they discovered it.

That includes new ways to interact with characters and each other and new ways to experience the books.

In the coming months, I will need beta readers and beta testers to try out some of the things I plan on doing next year. If youโ€™re up for that, whether youโ€™re new or youโ€™ve been here from the beginning, let me know by commenting below or PMing me directly. Iโ€™ll get you in the group to get your perspective on all my new plans.

THE NEW BOOK:

Finally, Iโ€™ve been dating a new book. Itโ€™s fun and exciting, and Iโ€™m excited to see where it goes. Weโ€™re not putting labels on whatever we are just yet. Weโ€™re not saying โ€œseriesโ€ or โ€œimmersive, interactive experience.โ€ But I will say it feels new, different, and unlike anything else that Iโ€™ve written.

Wanna know his name?

Well, instead of just telling you the title, Iโ€™m also going to share part of the art from the book cover without all the surrounding elements because Iโ€™m very good at keeping secrets.

The title and typography alone are a pretty strong hint at the genre and overall vibe, but if I had to, I would describe it as gothic but modern, thrilling, literary, and just a little scary. Itโ€™s a book that could sit on the shelf somewhere in the vast space between And Then There Were None and Interview with the Vampire.

So, yeah, Agatha Christie meets Anne Rice. No pressure.

You canโ€™t understand how nervous I am about sharing this. Itโ€™s been my sweet little imaginary romance for over a year, but I think itโ€™s time.

I call it Bronze for the Bloodletting, and I canโ€™t wait to tell you all about it.

  1. This all sounds so incredibly awesome! Ahhh, I don’t know where to start! The new book! Self care excitement! That cover art! New stories for next year! I am totally amped for all of it!

Would totally love to help out with beta testing in any way I can, if I could be helpful.

Self care and taking time off can be so incredibly important, especially, I find, in creative fields. I know how difficult giving yourself that time and then sticking to it can be, so it’s so awesome you’ve been able to do that for yourself!!

That all said, I’m ridiculously looking forward to the new year and hearing more from you and all your projects!

  2. I *loved* And Then There Weโ€™re None: โ€œcountdownโ€ mysteries are awesome!

Very glad to hear about settling into fall and the more stable workload. (Which e-ink notebook? Inquiring minds!)

1000% in for any beta testing you might want to do. Drop a line anytime.

    1. Hey Lex! I finally landed on the Supernote A5X, and I am SO happy with it. Using Notion as a project/task manager for the past couple of years was great, but I forgot how much I missed “pen” to “paper” writing. Hand writing is an entirely different experience, and turns out, exactly what my brain needed.

I love being able to cut and paste ideas and notes from one notebook to another and move tasks around. I’ve even kept up journaling because of how easy it is to use. And because you can erase and adjust, it doesn’t trigger my freeze-if-its-not-perfect issue. HIGHLY recommend if you’re considering it.

      1. I ended up getting myself a ReMarkable for Yule–I’m in love as well. My bet is that they’re very similar. I’ve more or less migrated my pen-and-paper notetaking–with the exception of some journaling that *needs* to be handwritten–onto the tablet.

  3. It’s great to hear you’ve had a productive time! The new book sounds rad as heck, can’t wait to check it out.
Also, while I’ve never been particularly involved in the Briarverse in the past (I’ve always found it kind of… intimidating?) I would love to help beta test/read/etc!

  4. BOOK BOOK BOOK BOOK BOOK
Okay now that’s out of the way, I’d be down to look at whatever. And yeah, I’m still not great at using the new forum. I miss my “latest” tab.

  5. As a long time lurker , feeling I came in a little late to the party I’ve def been waiting for things to feel new and or looking for that open door to a new fresh path. Looking forward to next year , we really need an influx of newbies like myself ! Should I be reading all the past work , regardless if the interactivity is finished ? Or wait for something new.

    1. Good to see you, Tactical! I think reading The Monarch Papers Vols. 1 & 2, and The Book of Briars would be essential, and I plan on having last year’s Briar Society narrative edited and published next year as well, which will catch you up on everything that happened past Book of Briars.
