Welcome to this year’s Mountie Fitness Month!

This year, we’re both simplifying and expanding the month’s challenges. I’d like to thank the whole community for their suggestions on guild workout playlists, and I’d like to thank my fellow leaders for helping me source content for each week!

Okay, so here’s the plan: we’re going to do something five days a week. Yes, five days a week. You can do this, and we’re going to do it together. It’s broken down into simple All-Guild Goals on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. We’ll have guild-specific breakouts on Tuesday and Thursday. Of course, feel free to do ANY guild’s breakouts! This year, all of the exercises are body-weight and require no special equipment or gym memberships. All of the workouts themselves were sourced from a free website – http://www.darebee.com (of Hero’s Journey fame) and require nothing special to access them. In fact, they’ll all be posted right here on the forum for your convenience!

This coming week’s All-Guild Goal is: add half a mile. If you’ve never run before, run a half mile on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. If you run regularly, add half a mile (or a mile) to your maximum. I’m at about a mile right now, so I’ll be shooting for 1.5 miles on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Tuesday and Thursday’s guild breakout workouts to follow.

Half a mile = roughly 0.8 km or 805 meters

Normally I walk 1.4 miles every weekday to Uni, so I was gonna try and make some excuse about walking double instead. Forgot that next week I’ve got study week and therefore no lectures… Guess I’m down for some running, though I’ve never done so willingly. Urg, this is gonna hurt… Let’s do it Mounties!

I hate running so much that when a friend asked me to do a 5k, I told her the only way I would run with her if she was chasing me with a weapon. I still suck it up and do it, though. When I was running consistently last year, I was in the best shape of my life (at 36!). I aim to get back there, and I’m excited to have and motivating by having all of you with me!

Finding places to run might become a challenge for me. We just had another blizzard and the snow isn’t scheduled to melt for weeks. Maybe I’ll jog in place indoors, or add a few more minutes to my daily cardio.

Having just done back to back races over the weekend, I’m going to go the add half a mile or so to an average day rather than a race length (so maybe 3.5-4 miles total).

So…I think I’m gonna have to start making substitutions right off the bat…I don’t really have a place to run (and I’m not comfortable going out and running in my neighborhood) BUT I’ve just started a gym pact with some coworkers! So M/W/F I’m doing classes at our campus gym: two days are zumba or cycling (depending on the mood), and one day is barre fitness. This is week 3 of the endeavor, and the first week where I’ve actually been able to go all 3 days!

That’s AWESOME! I was just setting some reasonable goals for people just starting out on their fitness journey, not needing resources like gym memberships and equipment. Use those to your advantage, and let us know on this thread how you’re doing!

Welp, I expected for this to go sideways for me further down the line, but I didn’t expect to fail on the first day…

The majority of that I had to walk otherwise I was going to have to turn straight back around for home. I forgot how much I hate cardio. Any suggestions for an alternative walking amount? Cause I can’t do another day of that.

I am so not going to be able to walk tomorrow…

Did you try running the whole thing straight through? I do intervals myself; the pacers I followed for most of my long race were having us do 15 seconds running, 30 seconds walking. I’d done (mostly) 30:45 for my intervals during the shorter race (until the heat/humidity got to be too much).

I’d definitely recommend trying intervals, even if the running portion is less than 15 seconds to start with.

Yeah, I was spacing it out. Had to, legs and breathing were giving out after more than probably 15-20 seconds. I am very out of shape…

Ended up being a lil extra cuz I used the cooldown button.

@Nimueh, I can’t run the whole thing, either. Feel free to take some time to work up to it; the group goal is for the whole week, and if it’s more important to you at the end of the week to get to the additional distance, go ahead! The most important thing is that we’re improving on where we’re at and encouraging each other.

I definitely second what Ashburn said about intervals; breaking it up into small bits helps me focus, and keeps my asthma/out-of-shape-ness from overwhelming me. You mentioned that you normally walk to uni. I’ve been told I walk like a New Yorker normally, but if that’s not you, maybe start with some speed walking? Or walk a few extra minutes and see how far you’ve gotten at the end? The more you do it, the easier it will get. :grinning:

The run of a whole mile begins with a single step, @Nimueh!

My cardio today is going to be shovelling snow when I get home from work, apparently. It’s important to keep things flexible and take it one step at the time. Keep posted for tomorrow’s guild breakouts later today!

So far so good this week: Monday zumba, Wednesday barre, Thursday dance rehearsal, and today we’re trying the cycling class. And I’m counting all the emotional hoops I had to jump through on Tuesday as my exercise :joy:

Honestly, it’s been all I could do this past week to keep up my regular exercise. yesterday’s workout did a number on me. It was mostly focused on my obliques, and today, I can hardly move without my sides reminding me.

I survived my first cycling class! I was super intimated because…well…it’s a bit of an intimidating setup. But I had a lot of fun! Definitely one to go back to!

I’m working on the Blogilates 100 ab challenge this month to go along with the Mountie Fitness initiative. Today was 100 sit ups and I was sure I wouldn’t be able to do it, and my family was teasing me the whole time. I hardly had any motivation until dad said

“You’ll never make it past 50!” Honestly I felt the same but I just had to prove him wrong. I surprised myself and managed to do all of them! (although I had to split it nto sets of 20). I feel really proud of myself but I’m sure I’ll regret everything tomorrow.

    Awesome job so far everyone!

If last week’s cardio challenge was “longer,” then this week’s is going to be “faster.” Try to increase your pace a little beyond last week’s baseline.

I usually run at a speed of “6” or “6 1/2” on the treadmill (1 mile in 10 minutes), so for this week, I’m cranking it up to 7.5 (1 mile in 8 minutes). For those of us not on a treadmill, elliptical, bike or using some other way to measure it, just time a run, then for the next run, try to shave off a minute or two by mindfully pushing yourself. Same goes for people doing individual goals – try to push yourself a little farther this week than last.

I’m really proud of everyone participating! Keep it up!

Tuesday/Thursday guild breakouts coming later today!

Here are the guild breakouts for Tuesday/Thursday of this week:

:weatherwatch: The Weatherwatch crew discovers the Further Fire burning within their own hearts,

      image

:gossmere: While Gossmere dance to the Common Drum like no one is watching.

      image

:flinterforge: Still meeting the Day’s Work with a broad smile, the Flinterforge guild burn their old bodies and build themselves brand new ones,

      image

:ebenguard: While the Ebenguard find the truth of the Golden Balance.

      image

:thornmouth: The Thornmouth guild surround themselves with the everburning Mindflame,

      image

:balimora: and not to be outdone, Balimora frees the Great Chaos into a storm of motion.

      Good luck this week, Mounties!

Posting this just in case any other beginning/amateur yogis are confused about the Ebenguard breakout: I don’t think this Tree Pose is a standard yoga Tree Pose. I think Darebee is putting in some modifications, or maybe their illustration is just confusing me. In any case, I wanted to link a couple of pose guides for anyone who finds the foot positioning awkward.

    Tree Pose (standard): https://www.yogajournal.com/poses/tree-pose

Eagle Pose (a similar stretch and balance pose to the half-squat shown here. If you have trouble with the arm twist while balancing, you can keep your hands in prayer and just focus on staying grounded.): https://www.yogajournal.com/poses/eagle-pose

    Namaste, and happy balancing! :bowing_woman:

    Good morning!

We’re a little last with this week’s cardio goal and breakouts, but worry not!

This week, we’re going to try to push ourselves by another half mile/0.8 km, adding this distance to our regular Monday/Wednesday/Friday maximum. As always, feel free to push yourselves in your individual goals if not running/walking/hiking/elliptical-ing/etc-ing.

    For guild breakouts, we have:

    :weatherwatch: Weatherwatch-

So as March is wrapping up, I wanted to check in: for every week except this week, I’ve gone to Monday Zumba, I’ve done Wednesday Barre every week (except I think one week it was swapped for an interval workout class), and I’ve done two Friday Cycling classes! And the schedule is working out pretty well, so I’m going to keep going (at least until the end of the semester when I’ll have to check the summer rec center offerings)

I think the general theme is that this last week was tough for everyone. I certainly have had a couple of DAYS this week so far. I know we’re pushing into April, but I’ll post one more set of goals/breakouts before we close out the month.

Congratulations, Mounties! We made it through Fitness Month! We ran longer. We went faster. We explored new workouts and broadened our horizons! I’m so very proud of everyone who participated; much of what we do here is “low energy” and stepping outside of our collective comfort zone is a big deal. Thanks for @Sellalellen and @Ginger for helping me put this all together, and thanks to @Saberlane for keeping the lights on at AGP for us.

I leave you with one more goal and one more workout. The goal: keep it up. Theme months are good gimicks to get stuff started, but I hope everyone who participated makes fitness (and overall health) part of their everyday routine. I hope people who didn’t participate pick something from the posts above and try it! Just because March is over, we can still all keep fit.

    Now, for the All-Guild Workout

:weatherwatch: :gossmere: :flinterforge: :ebenguard: :thornmouth: :balimora:

    Keep climbing, Mountaineers!
